0008 - Put my money down in Corn Futures...

Two recent corn-related posts from the environment front:
One predicting corn shortages because of all the interest in Ethanol fuels, so the Tobacco farmers are suggesting sweet potatos instead. Ok, so its more about the sweet-potato based biofuels than the corn, but its interesting to hear of some of the alternatives. Its always Corn this, Corn that, except for the engineering students who convert diesel engines to run on leftover french-fry grease. Mmmmm. french-fry-bus-fumes. With corn and sweet potatoes. When's BBQ season start up again?

The other article is about Water in corn-based compostable plastic. Neat! I was impressed enough when MEC had corn-based compostable shopping bags, but I had no idea you could make clear plastic bottles too! Kinda makes me wonder what else we'll start seeing in the far-more-biodegradable-packaging department. They'll have to start posting two best-before dates on packages... one for the product itself, and one for the wrapping it comes in. Just imagine - you know the salad dressing's not good anymore when the bottle melts away, leaving a sticky italian-herb scented mess in your fridge.

And, for the record, I really have no idea what "futures" are in the "market place", if "Corn futures" really exist, or where exactly the money goes when you "put it down" in these "futures". I'm going to say that "futures" are like a series of tubes, with one end of the tube attached to the flux capacitor and the other to your wallet/PayPal account, so that the money will go with the DeLorian and will, um, er, invest?
